The day could not have been more perfect. It was a little warm – normal for early July in West Michigan – and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. There was a slight breeze off of Lake Michigan as the sun began its daily journey towards the water. Oval Beach was filled with families soaking up the last few hours of their Fourth of July vacations, but we didn’t mind. Lexie and Nate were in their own little world.

We picked Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Michigan for Lexie and Nate’s engagement session, and it turned out even better than we imagined. They contemplated a downtown Grand Rapids or Holland engagement session, but ultimately decided the summer weather called for an evening at the beach instead – and I couldn’t agree more.

- Best timing: Weekday evenings. On weekends the beach fills up fast!
A playful, romantic session on the shore
My goal for every session – this one included – is to create a comfortable environment for a couple’s love to come through. I let Lexie and Nate know that this time was just for them – no thinking about work or wedding planning. We found a spot slightly removed from the evening crowds and dove right in (not literally — Lake Michigan was freezing!). I gave some direction to create moments of connection, but truly, there was little needed. Lexie and Nate leaned into each other, laughed at each other’s jokes, and got lost in their own world as the sun set over the lake.
